New Creations Across the Globe

Alyse Powell

Located in Harrisonburg, Virginia on 3051 South Mason Street is a non-profit called New Creations. Their mission is to creatively counteract sex trafficking with a local heart + global approach by offering survivor-made goods and fair trade accessories in our shops, as well as provide prevention education on the issue of human trafficking.

On October 18th, I went into New Creations to learn more about the agency’s connection with Moldova. As I talked to the executive director, Sabrina, I found out more about their partnership. New Creations works closely with a nonprofit in Moldova that seeks to save women from being trafficked. Because of the unemployment and financial struggle Moldova faces as a country, women that are trafficked are more than likely at risk for being trafficked out of their home country. These attackers are looking for young women who are willing to leave their home for a promise of a better life with work. However, when young women arrive at a new city in a new country, they are often faced with forced labor and sexual slavery. Being partnered with Moldova is a way New Creations creates job and holistic careopportunities for young women. New Creations currently has 32 employed throughout the program. Sabrina shared with me the memories she had of her flying over to Moldova and working with women to create merchandise that will sell in the US. She spoke about the importance of women demanding dignity and work, as they are more than what attackers label them as. Empowering women that have become victims of sexual assault is vital to their mental and physical well-being. I encourage those of you who read this to shine light on the importance of empowering women.
